Jasper - Alberta

Again with the delays on the Blog.

Since my last posting I have shot a bunch of fantastic weddings. One in Mexico, One in Hawaii, two in Jasper and a bunch in Edmonton.

I am going to post a few image from the most recent wedding Alex and Magda (last week). They got married at the Sawridge hotel in Jasper. After chruch we ended up running around town for some photographs, as well as at a special location given to me by a local wedding shooter.

It turned out to be a chilly day but Magda the bride out toughed everyone, and ended up braving the cold for some brilliant outdoor photographs.

It was a pleasure working with both Alex and Magda.

Ok, I have to start updating my wedding blog... I shot a bunch of weddings for some fantastic couples the past summer. The problem is juggling all of my commitments including my commercial blog on www.curtiscomeau.com and all the commitments that come with working regularly in the commercial field. I am so grateful to be managed but the IMP team, they handle my processing, files and client relations for 5th so it keeps thing going real smooth and allows me to focus on the photography, but they want me to do my own blog postings...

So here are some images of Stefan and Adrijana... It was so much fun shooting these two.

I loved her dress and I love the fact they choose red as their bridal colors!

These images are from Natalia and Adams wedding. They live in the USA but decided to have tier day in Freeport which was a fantastic choice as a backdrop to their special day.

It was a privilege to shoot their wedding.

Kim and Matt.

I shot Kim and Matt about 3 weeks ago through my wedding rep at IMP. They were a really cool couple and allowed me pretty much care blanch to shoot trough the day.

The ceremony and reception was at the Wawel (Vavel) country club and proved to be an excellent location for formals.

We then jetted off to the Alberta Legislature to rattle off some more images. I shot some of these on the Canon 1ds mark3 as well as the phase one p30+.

The phase may have been a little overkill for this, its just I really like the exposure latitude medium format offers.

Either way a fun wedding shot my way from IMP.

These were shot about 9 months ago for Matt and Tina in Akumal Mexico. But back then I didnt have a blog system that let me post really nice "BIG" photos. So I am posting these so the apprear much bigger.

Ever notice that? When someting is posted really big it is much more impressive.. Seriously even the most basic picture when enlarged to a redicouls size is impressive..

wedding bells 2010 spread

Its been a bit since I have last posted on 5th ave. Although I have shot a few weddings (6 or so) since my last post I have been super busy shooting commercial, and posting pretty much daily on my commercial site http://www.curtiscomeau.com/.

It's always a pleasure to be asked to photograph a spread for a magazine. Bridal spreads are especially fun because the dresses are always elegant. Typically you can't for too far in terms of makeup and styling, but the shoots are always pleasurable.

This was shot for the West Edmonton Mall 2010 Wedding Bells magazine. Keep an eye out for it on newsstands in January.

I will be posting more wedding pics in the near future.

Bridal Fashion Spread for Derks Formals

This shoot is for a bridal fashion magazine for Bridal Fantasy. Traditional bridal fashion is not really my thing, nor is over photo shopped texture bridal "fashion" shoots either.

That coupled with busy schedules has always made it difficult for me to schedule a shoot for the magazine. Infact we have been trying to set this up for the past 4 years!

When I heard Gay hooked up Kelly from the AB Ballet with this uber crazy (Elton John inspired gothic circus gone bad costume). Then I was really on board for the shoot.

I wanted the shoot to feel like an Mature rated "Tim Burton version of the Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus" But more over I really wanted to take the bridal fashion to another place... not the next level, but another place.

I sketched some ideas last night after my other shoots and brought them to the location in hopes for approval. When I arrived I presented my sketches to Gay.

She simply looked at me, smiled and said "Curtis do whatever you want, that's why be brought you on board."

So here is what I came up with!

Photographing weddings is an honor. Not only because a couple chooses you from dozens of photographers but also because a wedding contract is so much more meaningful compared to say a magazine or commercial shoot.

(Nathan losing a puck battle to his new wife, one of many he will lose in the upcoming years :))

I mean I do take the time and care when shooting a huge commercial project, but often the technical requirements of commercial or editorial overrides the emotional requirements.

Off my soap box now and on to Sarah and Nathan's wedding. This couple went pure Canadian on their wedding day.

I say that because they decided to bring out hockey sticks and hockey gloves to do some photographs. Now Im not usually into props, but when a couple asks to implement props into their shoot, then I'm all for it.

The wedding had a decent sized bridal party and all were very involved in the shooting process. They are going to have a extraordinary album with a nice mix of stylized and traditional photographs.

Both Sarah and Nathan are obviously huge hockey fans but each of them has their own team. One is a diehard Flames fan, the other is a true blue Oilers fan. The next 50 years should be very interesting between OCT 2 and playoff time.

I believe we are shooting a TRASH THE DRESS session with Sarah and her girlfriends in Calgary in a few weeks.

Dave and Janine in Kelowna

Here are a few images from Dave and Janine's wedding in Kelowna BC. The Okanogan in BC is a fantastic place to get married. Although temperature can get to above +30 and the light can often be hard. However locations are plentiful.

We shot at some gardens, as well as the Pyramid Winery and at the Docks of the Eldorado Hotel.

I had alot to fun shooting the wedding and the trip overall was just a blast.

I really like the photograph at the top of the blog. Its a real candid. I mean unposed pure "photojournalism" When I mean un posed, I was leaving the location and Janine was just walking back to the reception. I had absolutely no control over light or location... I just simply documented the scene. Thats real photojournalism. Its rare that this works because of the loss of control over the situation. Most photographer and rightfully so, control the scene somewhat... they tell you where to go in order to control the scene. Then they may allow you to do what you want in that area, but they are controlling it. Its rare but when a shooter gets a pure clean documentary image that makes the day all worth it. This specific photograph is not the "cleanest" photo but I just feel it captured Janine as I know her.

Brilliant Clients in Edmonton!

Again sorry for not posting more of my weddings.. I really need to... yikes,

This summer has been rolling along pretty good from the Commercial side. Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel is running for a 3rd term and he asked me to photograph new campaign images for him, Avenue Magazine had me photograph CFL quarterback Rickey Ray which was also alot of fun. And reciently I worked in Vancouver for Samsung and Saskatoon for PotAsh Corp.

I have quite enjoyed shooting weddings over the weekends. I am personally at a point in my career, that I can choose who I want to work with. Its a nice position to be in for both me and my wedding clients.

Many shooters do not want to shoot weddings, but to be honest if you have good clients, and are allowed to do exactly what you want, weddings are a really nice break from the face paced, pressure filled world of commercial and editorial photography

So here is a posting of a few images from Sam and Sareena's wedding.

Our formals were shot at the ledge grounds (which is a really nice place to shoot) and then a series at the highlands golf course.

A lot of photographers seem to think you have to shoot in an beat down alleyor somewhere super unique to provide unique photographs. For my shooting style I couldnt disagree more. My shooting style is pretty tight, which means I focus primarily on the couple, so location for me is really not all that important.

A big trend amongst Edmonton wedding photographers is to shoot wide, showing off their locations. That's cool, but its not for me.

Most of my commercial work is shot with a telephoto lens. I like to fill the frame, make the situations intimate and make my viewers really feel that the image is "full". This approach has severd me well, so naturally I don't change my style when it comes to weddings.

We had great weather, and they did such a fantastic job, no stress and alot of fun.

A few weeks ago I photographed a fellow photographers wedding.

Shooting for another photographer in any capacity is a stress full event, you want to do a good job of course, but you also want to make sure that your vision is in collation with thiers.

Formals were shot downtown, at the legislature and at a turn of the century boutique bed and breakfast called La Boheme. http://www.laboheme.ca/ I am posting a picture of Tanya shot on the stairs of La Boheme.

It was the last shot of the day and i just love it. You cant tell here but Tanya is actually pregnant!

I am so happy for Mike and Tanya and look forward to processing all of their wedding images in the upcoming weeks.

Jeff and Janna In California

Here are a few pics from Jeff and Janna's wedding at the Garre Winery in California. Garre was a fantastic location to host a wedding.

Jeff and Janna had alot of fun shooting all over the vineyard thought the day. I personally quite enjoy shooting in California because the light is very nice, and weather is rarely a major concern.

That being said, the following day in San Francisco the weather took a turn for the worse. Regardless, Jeff and Janna joined me the next day in San Francisco for a few trash the dress style images by the Golden Gate.
The images proved to be very emotional and some of my favorites.

If anyone is considering getting married at a destination winery I would strongly suggest checking out Garre.

Lara and Adam Hotel Mac - Edmonton

When it comes to blogging I have been quite a slacker and I apologize, I really should do this more but in my defense I have been bogged down with commercial work in Vancouver for the Olympics the past few weeks. But here are a couple images from Lara and Adam's wedding a few weeks ago. Adam and Lara were a bit more on the traditional side so the style I shot in reflects a more Victorian approach to the photo collection. I really try to capture the style of the couple I am shooting, and with Lara and Adam crazy over flashed images would simply not have worked for them. That's what's enjoyable about weddings, is that some photographers shoot their style no matter if the couple is into crazy artistic images or more traditional photos, if the couple are in their 20's or late early 40's, the style is always the same.

Fearless Fred and Jess

Fearless Fred used to be a radio host forb a station called The Bear in Edmonton Alberta. Some time last year Fred called and asked me to shoot his weddingI was honored to be asked, and knew this would not in any shape or form be a traditional wedding . Since then Fred has moved on to host another radio show in a major market of Toronto. However they both came back to Edmonton for their wedding.

I can tell you I have been looking forward to shooting their wedding for a while. I knew their personalities and knew they would want something a little quirky for their pics, but I had no idea what they had in mind until I got thier location list from the studio about a week before.

Their photo list was unique to be sure one of the locations for pictures was "crappy house" and another "Happy Harbor Comics".

It was a great day full of unique photos and interesting details like converse shoes for grooms men, a brides man instead of a brides maid, a grooms woman instead of a grooms man, and Darth Vader and Cylon shoes for the groom...

We wish Fred and Jess all the best in thier new home at the Center of the Universe, otherwise known as Toronto.
